Œufs en meurette, jambon persillé, beef simmered in wine, snails, époisses and gingerbread: Burgundian tradition plays out at the scale of cobbled lanes, between a bistro counter, a pizza oven, a pot of melted cheese and convivial tables where one lingers.
We have chosen to keep only five addresses — the ones we genuinely recommend to our guests. All are less than a five-minute walk from Maison Jazey, all chosen for the rightness of a dish, the warmth of a welcome, or that certain something that turns a table into a habit. The idea is not to cover everything, but to help each guest find their table, according to the mood of the evening.
Le Refuge, the house of melted cheeses.
On Rue Buffon, Le Refuge is the place for melting cheeses: Savoyard fondue, cep fondue, raclette over the brasero, pela des Aravis, boîte chaude. The décor evokes a chalet, the mood is convivial, the cooking warming — perfect for the cool evenings of the Auxois. A fine selection of Savoy and Burgundy wines to go with the dishes.
Our take: the feel-good address for autumn and winter, worth booking ahead at weekends. Reckon on €25–35 per person. Open Monday and Thursday to Sunday, lunch and dinner; closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
La Rumeur, Rue Buffon.
La Rumeur is the convivial bar-restaurant of the medieval centre: home cooking, fresh produce, a fine list of wines, beers and spirits. You'll find well-made burgers, tartares, cuts of beef and generous bistro dishes. The mood is relaxed — perfect for a fuss-free dinner or an end-of-day drink, at the counter or out on the terrace.
Our take: a safe bet when you want to eat late or enjoy a proper village local. Reckon on €20–35 in the evening. Service Tuesday to Saturday, lunch and dinner.
Les Minimes, a Burgundian table in the Maison-Dieu.
On Rue des Vaux, Les Minimes occupies the former Maison-Dieu, one of the finest half-timbered houses in Semur. Awarded the title of Maître Restaurateur, the kitchen serves home-made French cooking built on fresh, seasonal produce: Burgundy snails, œufs en meurette, slow-cooked meats, home-made desserts. The medieval setting — exposed stone, beams, fireplace — lends dinners a particular intensity.
Our take: the benchmark Burgundian table in Semur, ideal for a special-occasion dinner or a family Sunday lunch. Reckon on €30–45 à la carte. Open Wednesday to Sunday, lunch and dinner; Tuesday evening only; closed Monday.
O'Scandalo, a Neapolitan pizzeria.
A small, recent pizzeria that has Semur talking, O'Scandalo turns out authentic Italian pizzas — long-proved dough and ingredients true to the Neapolitan tradition. The room is modest in size, the welcome warm, the menu short and honest. The first reviews, unanimously enthusiastic, confirm the sense of a serious, artisanal address.
Our take: the charming Italian option, ideal for a simple, cheerful, well-made dinner with friends or family. Reckon on €12–20 for a pizza. Service Tuesday to Saturday, lunch and dinner.
Cantine de Zan, Rue de la Liberté.
Two doors from Maison Jazey, the Cantine de Zan is the kind of neighbourhood bistro you take to at once. The menu changes with the seasons: a few French classics, nods to Italy, fresh produce handled without fuss. You drop in for a quick lunch and linger in the evening over a dish of the day and a glass of Burgundy.
Our take: the closest address, ideal for a first night after arrival without getting back in the car. Reckon on €15–25 at lunch, €25–40 in the evening. Open Wednesday to Sunday; closed Tuesday.
